Piecing Together History
The Pacers Motocross Club has deep roots in Okinawa’s riding community, but much of its early history remains a mystery waiting to be rediscovered. What we do know is that the track may have been established as far back as the late 1950s and became a thriving hub for both American service members and Okinawan riders. At its peak, the club boasted over 100 American members and 300 Okinawan members — a true reflection of the shared passion for motocross that transcended culture and language.
Over the years, the Pacers track evolved alongside its riders. In the late 1970s, the clubhouse was moved to the pits, new equipment was acquired to keep the track in top shape, and by 1980, a new scoring tower stood proudly overlooking the races. That same year, the Pacers hosted Japan’s top rider, Mitsuyasu Tetsumi, who visited and raced at the track, drew a crowd of more than 3,000 spectators — one of the most memorable moments in the club’s history. The facility once featured both a motocross and a flat track, drawing riders from across the island to compete and connect through their love of the sport. Though the track was shut down in 1988, its legacy continues through the stories, photos, and friendships that were built there.
We invite anyone with memories, photos, or information about the Pacers or the Okinawa motocross scene to share what they know. Every detail helps us piece together the history of a club that brought so many riders together under one banner — the Pacers.
